Coastal Home — Xeriscape. front yard landscape

“ It was a pleasure working with Hana from start to finish! Our front yard is a show stopper, that’s for sure—exceeded our expectations by far. Hana really took the time to understand what we wanted and how the space would be used. A true artiste, she started with sketching the front of our house, onsite, as she meditated on the design.

But landscape design isn’t her only gift. When I informed her of our tough compacted clay terrain, not only did she bring in additional nutrient-rich topsoil, but also lava rock and native sandstone soils to help with the drainage around certain plants, like Manzanitas.

As for the plants themselves, she went out of her way to find the best specimens possible in terms of health, size and our budget. As someone who loves plant shopping, I know that plant quality can vary greatly from nursery to nursery. While she sourced her materials from several different locations she kept me updated with texts and photos, giving me agency to veto or praise her choices.

Hana’s process is fluid and the design constantly evolved according to her plant selection, her communication with us, and ultimately, her innate artistic vision. She even planned some surprises for us as the landscape came together. For example, I had no idea (and at first, probably neither did she!) that she would create a Zen-like living sculpture featuring rare boulders surrounded by strategically placed grasses, or a dry creek bed meandering through giant native mossy boulders and two iconic specimen trees!

…The other evening as I was strolling through my front yard, I felt as though I was hiking through a serene alpine meadow… It’s more than a landscape. Everything is perfectly placed and balanced with form, structure and color like in a beautiful painting.

My advice to potential future clients? Let Hana know what you want and then sit back and watch as she works her magic. You will be thrilled with the result! ”

Our backyard was woefully neglected, and the first thing she recommended was a fresh treescape. She guided a crew that did an amazing job thinning and lifting the canopies of our overgrown Oaks and other trees, which had largely obscured our view to the Redwood forest beyond. The effect was swift and transformative. We hadn’t realized what a difference it would make. This is why people like us need people like Hana. We literally could not see the forest through the trees!

Which brings me to her next fabulous quality: vision. Again, we were lacking in that department but fortunately Hana could compensate. We provided limited input about what we wanted (like, I like purple. My husband likes ferns.), but with enough prodding she was able to get a sense of our tastes and then fill in the blanks. We were so impressed by her thoughtful questions and professionalism throughout the creative process.

She transformed large sections of our backyard with a variety of beautiful, drought-tolerant plants including some spectacular succulents, flowering perennials, and lovely trees all carefully planted in soil that she had conditioned and prepped accordingly. She procured some magnificent boulders in different shapes and colors, which look very striking among the plants where she placed them. She also created beautiful rock beds in the shady areas, as opposed to laying more mulch, and integrated a large custom built trellis.

It was great having her to give in-person updates throughout the process and share some of her abundant plant knowledge with us. She was so generous with her time and effort, it made the whole experience fun and exciting. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her for anyone who wants high-quality design and sustainable landscaping. ”

Mountain Home — Urban Farming. comprehensive Landscape

“ We hired Hana to help us with our one-acre property, which is broken up into different sections around the house. Her idea to maximize the uniqueness of each space rendered inviting results… She took time to get to know the soil and lighting in each section, and created small sitting areas so that we can enjoy it all.

Our main hope was to install some fruit trees and native, drought-resistant plants. We now have a beautiful mini orchard of 8 trees, and a plethora of colorful plants of differing sizes and fun textures. Each section draws the eye at every angle according to plant placement, all expertly created by Hana and installed by her crew.

Besides the gorgeous end result, working with Hana was also a pleasure. She is professional, and involves you in the entire process of selection to make sure everyone’s on the same page. Coastal Home — Tropical Modern. Side + Backyard Landscape

I relied heavily on Hana for the creative aspect of this project and I was not disappointed. In fact, I am so thrilled with the outcome. She is truly a talented and brilliant designer. Hana spent quality time with me as we discussed ideas for the landscape and gave her examples of plants that I liked. She took those ideas and with her expertise and vision made my backyard functional, environmentally sound, and beautiful.

The plants are young now, I’m enjoying watching them grow and fill in. As they do, I can even better visualize Hana’s vision for the space. Hana was communicative and organized throughout the project duration and she was a pleasure to work with. She brought on a contractor to complete a custom concrete patio I wanted and Hana designed and the result is amazing. I have had multiple neighbors comment on how beautiful the yard turned out, and I look forward to enjoying it for many years to come. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a high-quality creative, efficient, sustainable landscape designer.

East Bay Area Home. Landscape Tune up + Treescape

“Hana brought my yard back to baseline. We purchased an beautiful mid-century home on a wild 1/3 acre lot. The landscape had so much potential, but it was immensely overgrown, crowded and a headache to visualize as a yard. Hana helped me decipher a plan, deciding which plants / trees to purge, which ones to rejuvenate and what to hold space for for a future comprehensive design.

The landscape has now opened up, I feel more focus in the space and I love how each tree shines with it's own personality. My favorite feature is actually a shrub she had transformed into a tree. It resembles a little beach umbrella which essentially is a metaphor for how it feels to be in my yard. A lot more relaxing.”
